In 1989, LI Feng-yun became the final student in the long
and distinguished lineage of ZHANG Zi-qian (1899-1991), who
was the foremost Master of the Guangling School style of
qin performance. Since 1994, Ms. LI has been studying under
the guidance of XU Jian of the Chinese Music Research Institute
of Qin, focusing her research on the theory and translation
of ancient Qin notation. As a featured artist LI Feng-yun
can also be heard on the 2002 recording Hard

MEI Ri-qiang is also called Nan Yi has been playing the Qin
for over sixy years. In 1956 he studied with LIU Shao-chun
and thoroughly learned the Guangling style. His playing has
a spontaneous natural flow and feeling of quietude. Even
though his life has been filled with hardships and difficulties,
MEI's music is honest and correct, simple and unsophisticated,

Wumen is another name for Suzhou which is
a famous cultural city known for its music, painting, poetry
and calligraphy. The province of Wu (Suzhou) is renowned
for its aesthetic beauty and pictorial landscape. The Wu

The late WU Zhao-ji was born in 1908 in Hunan Province
and moved to Suzhou in 1912. He learned the Qin from
his father WU Lan-shun. WU was a very suave and tender
gentleman, conversant in both western and Chinese
music. He was also a Professor of Mathematics. In
addition to his cultivation in eastern and western
music and science, Mr. WU was a life-long practitioner
of Qi-Gong (a system of deep-breathing excercises).
These special attributes and gifts gave his qin style
a very deep and penetrating spirit. These two recordings
are highly recommended.
YAO MEN QIN
"Yaomen Qin Music" consists
of new recordings by the sons of the late Qin master
YAO Bing-yan and valuable historical recordings of
the master, which was part of his transcriptions and
research of ancient qin music.
